The life, spiritual journey, and eternal teachings of the God-Given Beggar of Tiruvannamalai.
Sri Yogi Ramsuratkumar was born on December 1, 1918, in Katpadi, Vellore district, Tamil Nadu, India. Born into a family of devout faith, He was drawn to spiritual life from His earliest years.
After completing His education and briefly working as a school teacher, the fire of spiritual longing became irresistible. He embarked on a sacred pilgrimage that would transform not only His own life, but the lives of thousands.
His first encounter was with Papa Ramdas of Anandashram, Kerala — a saint of profound realization who became His primary Guru. From Papa Ramdas, He received the name-mantra of Ram and the understanding of total surrender to God. Swami Ramdas's teaching: "Ram is all. Ram does all" became the cornerstone of His own realization.
He also visited Ramana Maharshi at Tiruvannamalai, where He received the silent grace of the great Sage. Arunachala — the sacred hill — called Him, and He eventually made Tiruvannamalai His permanent home, returning to it again and again through decades of wandering.
For many years, Swamiji lived as a wandering mendicant on the streets of Tiruvannamalai, sleeping in the open, eating whatever was offered, and radiating divine joy to all who encountered Him. His appearance — bearded, wearing minimal clothing, carrying a palm-leaf fan and a pipe — made Him seem like an ordinary beggar. Yet those who came near Him sensed something extraordinary.
Gradually, devotees began gathering around Him. In the 1980s and 1990s, His following grew immensely. The Yogi Ramsuratkumar Ashram was established in Tiruvannamalai. Great annual festivals were celebrated, drawing thousands from across India and the world.
On February 20, 2001, Swamiji entered Mahasamadhi — the conscious departure from the physical body. His Samadhi Mandir at the Ashram remains a centre of pilgrimage and worship, where His presence is felt to this day.
